november 5th 2006 - Farrell the garden cat / balloons : farrell was born in the front garden of our apartment building in april 2006. he (and his mom and sibs) was trapped with the help of the feline foundation of greater washington, neutered and given a health check before being re-released into our garden to become the building's official guard cat... well ok, he's a bit too friendly for that... so perhaps he's our mascot (or should that be mas-cat?!)

october 1st 2006 - crafty bastards : the third annual crafty bastards shoe took place at the Marie Reed Learning Center in Adams Morgan. the event is an arts & crafts fair for alternative, independent artists (or as one friend put it so pithily "it's just one big hipster convention") with the added bonus of a live stage area that featured among others, our fave baltimore burlesqe performers, belly dancers and break dancers...

(or rather, go maize...) : at the invitation of paul, i attended my first american college football game, in the best place to see one - ann arbor, michigan. i witnessed the spectacle that is a wolverines game, from the marching band to the endless frat parties, as they took on the badgers of wisconsin. the full set of images can be seen in this gallery.

Crystal Palace? : Crystal Palace football soccer EaglesCrystal Palace Football Club started their 2006 preseason tour of the USA against their newly inaugurated development team, Crystal Palace USA. The match took place at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland on July 15th 2006. The final score was 3-1 to the London side, but it was a fiercely contested game, with both teams impressing.

Hannover (Hanover) : World Cup 2006 Germany soccer football fans Hannover Hanover Switzerland Swiss South KoreaOn our final full day in Germany, we took another great bike ride, this time through Hannover instead of to the outskirts. The day ended at the stadium to sit amidst the sea of red for Switzerland vs. South Korea.

june 22nd 2006 - Nürnberg (Nuremberg) : World Cup Germany 2006 football soccer fans USA Ghana goal Dempsey Nuremberg NürnbergWe took a chance and decided to take the train to Nuremberg without tickets for the USA Ghana game, figured that the market wouldn't be as bad as many other games as it didn't involve a European or highly-rated team (i.e. not as many travelling supporters). We figured right, paying a small premium to sit in the midst of a gaggle of Ghana fans. They were the friendliest, happiest football fans I've ever met! Alexi and I headed straight back to Hannover after the game for our final game the next day.

june 20th 2006 - Köln (Cologne) : World Cup Germany 2006 football soccer fans England Sweden beer gardenErwin and I went down to the Stadtgarten to watch the broadcast of Germany vs. Ecuador in the first round of the World Cup. We even had our picture taken for the "Worlds's biggest fan photoalbum". Later that day, Erwin accompanied me in my quest for an affordable ticket to the England Sweden match. 59,999 other England fans in the city without tickets made it quite a seller's market and the cheapest ticket - $650 - as well out of my range.

june 17th 2006 - Köln (Cologne) : World Cup football soccer 2006 Dom cathedral Ghana England Germany fans USA Italy police polizeiWe did the touristy thing with Yvonne and Erwin, climbing the spire of the Dom (cathedral) and wandering the city's squares, where we encountered many groups of fans from various countries, England being the most well represented. Later that evening, we went to a bar and watched the USA Italy game on an outdoor TV.

june 15th 2006 - Berlin : World Cup Germany 2006 football soccer Berlin Sweden Paraguay Olympiastadion Olympic Stadium fansAlexi and I took the train this morning to Berlin, where we did some touristy stuff, had lunch, inspected the Fan Mile along Unter den Linden, then met up with my friend Debbie after she got off work. We watched the England Trindidad game on big screens, then headed over to the Oympiastadion for our first live game, Sweden vs. Paraguay. We then took a late train back to Hannover.

june 13th 2006 - arrival in Germany for the World Cup : World Cup Germany 2006 lufthansaMy friend Alexi asked me last year if I'd want to go to the World Cup in Germany. His aunt and uncle in Hannover would apparently be glad to put us up and my friend Debbie in Berlin said the same. So we applied for tickets and were successful - one game in Hanover, another in Berlin. We arrived in Hannover June 13th, two days before our first game.

may 21st 2006 - MS Ride end / roller derby : The Charm City Roller Girls is a roller derby league in Baltimore, currently featuring four teams: Speed Regime, Mobtown Mods, Night Terrors and Junkyard Dolls. I paid my first visit with a bunch of fellow photogs, and depsite the fact that I brought all my lenses but not my camera body, I managed to get a few decent shots thanks to the kindness of Eric, who filled his memory cards and lent me his 20D with one bout left in the evening's schedule, the Night Terrors vs. the Junkyard Dolls. may 15th 2006 - shout band gospel, dupont circle : The Madison Sounds of Deliverance perform on the edge of Dupont Circle. They are one of three "shout bands" affiliated with the United House of Prayer For All People at 601 M St NW, Washington DC, playing "shout band" gospel (and not dixlieland jazz, as I had incorrectly assumed when I first posted these). april 26th 2006 - eliot monocular : eliot had to have his eye removed six days ago to prevent the freckle in his iris that became a nevus from becoming a malignant melanoma. the vet told us he really wouldn't miss it, but we weren't so sure what to believe. however, i'm pleased to report that within 48 hours after his surgery, he is running around and jumping up on stuff just like he did before the surgery!

april 15th 2006 - Dana Ellyn redoes Renoir outside the Phillips Collection : DC artist Dana Ellyn was commissioned by the Phillips Collection to create a sidewalk chalk reproduction of Luncheon of the Boating party, as part of the opening events of their special exhibition, "The Renoir Returns: A Celebration of Masterworks at The Phillips Collection", which marked the homecoming of signature works (like this Renoir) and completion of a major building project.
